THANIMA 2


The second conference was held in 19, 20 and 21 January 2017 again at NIT, Calicut, supported by IIA, Calicut Center and Existential Knowledge foundation- Pune. The conference was called ‘Reimagining Aesthetic Unfolding – From Conditioning to Awakening’ The 2nd International Conference on Design Pedagogy and Contextual Aesthetics (ICDPCA). The main themes discussed were Globalization and homogenization of cultures: modernity and rootlessness, learning from diversity: tradition and cultural rootedness: recollecting the past, Search for authenticity: not for alternatives and Rethinking foundation: connecting with the context: shifting from social responsibility to cultural responsibility.

Highlights:

The conference was attended by delegates from all over India and 69 papers were presented during the three day conference. Mr Pavan Gupta, Claude Alvares, Judy Frater and Anupama Kundoo delivered the keynote addresses. Thanmaya, an all India student competition for documenting persons or building or any product with rootedness in traditional knowledge, skills and creativity was successfully held.

THANIMA 1


The first conference of Thanima was conducted at Department of Architecture and Planning, NIT Calicut, on 30 and 31 January 2015, with the theme 'Reinventing Design Pedagogy & Contextual Aesthetics', aimed at exploring various aspects of aesthetics – formation, conditioning, politics, and connection with culture and ways of teaching design {pedagogy}. The conference addressed the need to overcome stultifying cultural homogenization and to recapture the lost aesthetics more rooted in our milieu along with the importance to impart education without killing the creative and inventive spirit in children and orient them in culturally authentic ways.

Highlights:

The conference was attended by 300 delegates from all over India and over 40 selected papers on various themes were presented during the two days of intellectual discourse. Ar. Nimish Patel of Abikram architects, Ahmedabad, Smt.Laila Tyabji of Dastkar, New Delhi and Guru Ravindra Sharma of Kala Ashram delivered the keynote addresses.
